Carved head with bismuth in applewood pendant

Designed and carved by Dominic Koval
at the Well of Stars, Lake Elmore, Vermont

Bismuth, a relatively rare metal in nature, was probably used as a beauty care product in antiquity. The shimmering characteristics of its colors and the nontoxicity of its composition have led to many industrial uses in modern times, when it is primarily laboratory-synthesized. Fulfilling an ancient alchemical dream, in 1980 it was actually converted into gold at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California.
